Rebuilding Kashmir: A Campaign for Mental Health & Addiction Recovery

Introduction:

Kashmir, renowned for its breathtaking beauty, is facing a silent yet devastating crisis—addiction, mental health struggles, and rising suicide rates. Families are being torn apart, and communities are destabilized, threatening the future of Kashmir’s next generation. Kashmir has now surpassed Punjab as the state with the highest number of drug users. The Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (IMHANS) is currently the only drug rehabilitation center in Kashmir, aside from one operated by the police.

Substance Abuse:

  • Prevalence: Over one million people, aged 17-45, are reported to be using drugs in Kashmir, representing 8% of the population.
  • Specific Substances:
    • Cannabis: 108,000 males and 36,000 females.
    • Opioids: 534,000 males and 8,000 females.
    • Sedatives: 160,000 males and 8,000 females.
    • Other Substances: A significant number of users are addicted to cocaine, Amphetamine-Type Stimulants (ATS), and hallucinogens.

Heroin Crisis:

  • Dominance of Heroin: Heroin is the most consumed drug in Kashmir, with nearly 90% of drug users dependent on it.
  • Injection Use: 52% of substance abusers inject heroin.
  • Heroin Seizures: In 2023, heroin seizures reached 240 kg.

Mental Health Struggles:

  • Prevalence: Nearly 45% of Kashmir’s population, or around 1.8 million people, suffer from mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, and PTSD.
  • Impact on Youth: Mental health and addiction issues primarily affect youth aged 17-33.

Rising Suicide Rates in Kashmir:

  • Climbing Rates: Suicide rates have surged, increasing 26 times since the 1990s, reaching 13 per 100,000 people.
  • Regional Hotspots: Districts such as Budgam, Baramulla, and Anantnag reported the highest number of suicide attempts in recent years.
  • Youth Vulnerability: Suicide is notably rising among youth aged 18-28, exacerbated by addiction and mental health issues
  • Link to Substance Abuse: The use of synthetic opioids, such as Fentanyl, has significantly contributed to the rise in overdose cases.

But There Is Hope

At the forefront of this fight is Dr. Tanveer A. Padder, a renowned Indian-American psychiatrist and addiction specialist. With extensive experience in treating severe addiction and mental health challenges, Dr. Padder understands the life-saving impact that timely treatment and compassionate care can have. Together with Kashmir Online, Dr. Padder is launching several critical initiatives to combat this crisis:

  • Addiction Treatment & Rehabilitation Centers offering modern facilities and evidence-based therapies.
  • Mental Health Counseling providing crucial emotional and psychological support.
  • Educational Campaigns to raise awareness, break the stigma, and guide preventive measures.
  • Support for Families to help them heal collectively, offering a lifeline for those caught in the cycle of addiction and despair.
